Families in the Charlotte area who are deciding whether a public high school can do what the private schools do, or who are choosing a home with the school zone in mind, tend to end up looking at Weddington High School. In this profile, we set out what Weddington offers—the AP and dual-enrollment courses, the counseling, how enrollment works, and what the rankings do and don’t measure—and we say where a large public school of this quality matches the private schools in our series and where it doesn’t.
Weddington is the one public school in our Charlotte series, and the comparison with the other four is the point of including it. We believe the honest version is this: on courses, results, and where graduates enroll, Weddington holds its own against schools charging $27,000 to $36,500 a year, and the one thing those schools buy that it cannot match is adult attention per student. Which of those matters more depends on your child, and we say below which students the difference costs and which it doesn’t.
We used the same criteria here as for the four private schools, with one adjustment: where the private schools’ college counseling figures are not comparable to a public school’s, we say so rather than compare them.
Weddington High is a traditional district high school in Union County Public Schools (UCPS), on Monroe Weddington Road with a Matthews mailing address; it is not a charter or magnet school. For the side-by-side comparison with the four private schools, see our Guide to the Best Charlotte High Schools.

Weddington graduated its first class in 2002 and its 25th in 2026. It sits next to Weddington Elementary and Weddington Middle, and UCPS used it as the prototype for Porter Ridge High School, which opened in 2005.
Three sources rank Weddington, and a parent should know what each one measures before putting weight on it.

| NC School Performance Grade (state) | A (score 89); met expected growth | 2024–25 |
| US News Best High Schools | #23 in NC; #8 in the Charlotte metro; #697 nationally | 2026–27 |
| Niche | A+ overall; #7 of 114 public high schools in the Charlotte area; #22 of 649 public high schools in NC | 2027 |
The state grade is built mostly on end-of-course test results and growth, so it says how well the school teaches the state curriculum to all its students. US News weighs college readiness, including AP participation and performance, which is closer to what a family aiming at a selective university cares about. Niche blends data with parent and student reviews, and it is the only one of the three that lets you compare Weddington directly with private schools, which the state and US News don’t rank. Weddington has earned an A on the state grade in every year shown on the current report card (2019 and 2022 through 2025), and its four-year graduation rate is above 95% (2024–25), the highest band the state reports.
A school of about 1,900 students can offer a course list that a private Upper School of 450 to 750 cannot, and that is the academic case for Weddington. The 2025–26 School Profile lists 20+ Advanced Placement (AP) courses across science, math, English, history, world languages, art, psychology, and computer science. AP courses are college-level classes with a national exam each May, and they are the main way a US student shows a university that they took the hardest work available. Honors courses run in multiple subjects and are weighted at 4.5 for an A. There is no International Baccalaureate (IB) program; UCPS runs IB at other schools. Classes run on a block schedule.
The AP results are strong for a school this size: in the results reported in the 2025–26 profile, 83% of AP exams (1,779 of 2,135) scored a 3 or higher, the usual threshold for college credit. US News reports that 77% of students take at least one AP exam and 60% pass at least one, which tells you the program reaches most of the school rather than a small top tier.
What Weddington has that none of the private schools in our series offers is dual enrollment. Career & College Promise (CCP) is North Carolina’s free dual-enrollment program, through which juniors and seniors take South Piedmont Community College courses for both high school and college credit, and 315 Weddington students were enrolled in it in 2024–25. For a student who has run through the AP list in a subject, or who wants transferable college credit before graduating, this is the route; the one thing to check with a counselor first is that not every CCP course earns weighted quality points in the GPA, which the school itself notes.
Two other programs are worth knowing about:
The counseling numbers are where a public school and a private school stop being comparable. Weddington’s profile lists five school counselors for 2025–26. Against the Class of 2025’s 462 seniors, that is about 92 seniors per counselor by our calculation, or about 380 students per counselor across all four grades. But these five handle all counseling: course scheduling, academic planning, social and emotional support, and college applications. The private schools in our series have separate college counseling offices whose counselors do nothing else, so Country Day’s 27 or Charlotte Christian’s 55 is a different job from Weddington’s 92, and the figures should not be set side by side as if they measured the same thing.
What the number does mean is that the hours a Weddington counselor can give any one student’s college applications are limited, and the families who get the most from the office are the ones who use it for what it does best: the four-year course plan, the school recommendation, and the transcript. The time-heavy work, a balanced university list and the essays, is done at home or with help, on the family’s own schedule rather than in the fall of senior year when the counselor has 92 other seniors.
Weddington does not publish SAT or ACT averages. Niche reports an average SAT of 1330 and an average ACT of 29, but those are self-reported by Niche users rather than official school figures, and we would not plan around them. On the state’s own measure, 84.5% of students met the ACT composite benchmark in 2024–25. The Class of 2027 has 16 National Merit Semifinalists, the recognition awarded to the top PSAT scorers in each state in 11th grade; that is more than Latin’s 12, the only private school in our series that reports Semifinalists, from a class roughly three times the size.
The 2025–26 profile lists universities where Class of 2025 graduates were admitted or enrolled, including Columbia, Princeton, Stanford, Duke, Davidson, Emory, Middlebury, Georgia Tech, UC Berkeley, UNC-Chapel Hill, and Virginia Tech, plus appointments to the US Naval Academy and US Air Force Academy. The profile doesn’t separate acceptances from enrollments or give counts, so it shows the range of what is possible from Weddington rather than what is typical.
For a self-directed student with a family that will run the college process, Weddington gives up very little to the private schools. The AP list is longer than Charlotte Christian’s or Latin’s, the AP pass rate of 83% is within ten points of Providence Day’s 93%, the National Merit count is higher, and the top of the matriculation list reaches the same universities. For what those universities weigh, see our guide to how to get into the Ivy League.
For a student who needs an adult to notice when things slip, the difference is real, and it is the difference a private school’s tuition is partly buying. At 92 seniors and 380 students per counselor, nobody at Weddington is going to chase a student who hasn’t started essays by October, and a quieter student in a class of 439 can go four years without a teacher knowing them well enough to write a strong letter. A family with that child should either plan to supply the attention themselves or look at a smaller school.
The third thing is the applicant pool. At a large, high-achieving school, many strong students from the same building apply to UNC-Chapel Hill, Georgia Tech, and the other popular choices each year, with letters from the same five counselors. Your child’s application has to show what is distinctive about them beyond grades and AP counts, and that is a writing problem more than a transcript problem.
What no one can promise, for a Weddington student or a Providence Day student, is a result at the top of the list. A family can control whether the application is finished early and reflects the student, and at a school with this caseload that is the family’s job.

There is no application for Weddington High. Enrollment is set by address: students who live in the Weddington High attendance zone are assigned to the school, and UCPS offers a “What School Do I Attend?” lookup on its site. Weddington is not a lottery or magnet school.
For 2026–27, UCPS lists Weddington High among the schools where transfer requests cannot be approved because of capacity limits. The only exceptions are the sibling and employee criteria and transfers required by law. The district closes a school to transfers when it is full, so the closure is a sign of demand rather than of anything wrong, and it means that the only way in for most families is to live in the zone.
The zone is not the same as the neighborhood name. The Weddington cluster draws from Antioch, Weddington, Rea View, and Wesley Chapel elementary schools and Weddington Middle, but Rea View and Wesley Chapel are split feeders, and some of their students go on to Marvin Ridge or Cuthbertson instead. A family buying or renting with Weddington in mind should check the exact street address with UCPS before committing, not the elementary school and not a listing description.
For a family new to UCPS, the steps are:
Weddington is a public school, so there is no tuition for students zoned to it in 2026–27. Families should expect the usual public school fees, such as athletics, parking, and AP exam fees, which the school doesn’t publish. Set against $27,055 to $36,500 a year at the private schools, the four-year difference is between $108,000 and $146,000 before any aid, which is the figure to keep in mind when weighing what a private school’s smaller caseloads are worth to your child.
Clubs range from Academic Quiz Bowl, Debate, and competitive Science Olympiad to Key Club, FCA, Journalism, and Student Government. The arts are strong: at Blumenthal Arts’ 2026 Blumey Awards, Weddington won Best Musical (Tier 1) for Legally Blonde: The Musical, along with Best Ensemble.
Athletics are a large part of the school’s identity. Weddington competes in the Southern Carolina Conference at the NCHSAA 7A level, and it has won NCHSAA state championships in football, lacrosse, soccer, and basketball, along with the NCHSAA’s Wells Fargo Cup for overall athletic excellence. Recent football alumni include NFL players Will Shipley (Clemson, Philadelphia Eagles) and Malik Mustapha (Wake Forest, San Francisco 49ers). For a serious athlete, 7A public-school competition is a different level of exposure from the NCISAA, and the football alumni list shows it.
Weddington and the Charlotte private schools are different options more than direct rivals, and the differences are cost, size, and how you get in. The private schools admit by application regardless of address and charge $27,055 (Charlotte Christian) to $36,500 (Charlotte Latin) a year; Weddington admits by address and charges nothing. Their Upper Schools run from 442 to 754 students; Weddington has 1,899.
Weddington wins on price, on dual enrollment, on JROTC, on athletic exposure, and on National Merit count. It loses on counselor time by a wide margin and on class size, and it offers no admissions path to a family outside the zone. A family in the zone with a self-directed child should think hard before paying for a private school; a family with a child who needs to be known, or who lives outside the zone, should look at the private schools, starting with alternatives like Country Day if counselor attention is the priority. See the full side-by-side comparison in our Guide to the Best Charlotte High Schools.
Can I transfer to Weddington High School? Generally, no. For 2026–27, UCPS lists Weddington High as closed to transfers because of capacity, with the only exceptions being the sibling and employee criteria and transfers required by law. The way to attend is to live in the attendance zone, and the UCPS school lookup will confirm a specific address.
Is Weddington High School public or private? Public. It is a traditional district high school in Union County Public Schools, not a charter or magnet school, with no tuition for students who live in its zone. The Matthews mailing address is the reason some families assume otherwise.
What is the average SAT score at Weddington High School? The school doesn’t publish one. Niche’s figure of 1330 (and an ACT of 29) is self-reported by its users and shouldn’t be treated as official. The state reports that 84.5% of students met the ACT composite benchmark in 2024–25, which is the only official test figure available.
Does Weddington High School offer dual enrollment? Yes, through North Carolina’s Career & College Promise program, which enrolled 315 Weddington students at South Piedmont Community College in 2024–25. Check with a counselor before choosing courses, because not every CCP course earns weighted GPA points.
At a school where five counselors serve 1,900 students, the four-year course plan, the testing calendar, and the essays are the family’s to manage, and the choices made in 9th and 10th grade carry most of the weight.
