Across five years at Providence Day School, he’s taught everything from AP Language & Composition to graphic novels, coached tennis at every level, and built the school’s Social Entrepreneurship program, running Hackathons that reached more than 1,200 students across the Charlotte metro area. He has since worked with students at North Carolina School of Science and Mathematics, Charlotte Latin, Charlotte Country Day, Myers Park, Weddington, Marvin Ridge, Lake Norman Charter, Charlotte Catholic, Charlotte Christian, Ardrey Kell, and beyond. He knows these schools, their counselors, and the specific pressures their students face, because he has been in the room with them.
James holds a PhD in English from the University of South Carolina and graduated summa cum laude from the University of Georgia’s Honors Program. That training shows up in how he coaches writing: he treats the college essay not as a form to fill out but as an argument to make—clearly and comprehensively, in the student’s real voice.
