Video essays give admissions committees evidence that written application materials alone cannot provide. As generative AI makes essays easier to produce—and harder to interpret as a reliable measure of an applicant’s unaided voice—schools have greater reason to supplement traditional essays with time-limited, recorded responses.
Impromptu video assessments allow admissions teams to observe how applicants organize ideas in real time, communicate clearly, convey personality and motivation, and respond under pressure. Schools explicitly describe video questions as tools for assessing communication skills, leadership potential, personality, cultural fit, and the qualities that may not emerge from transcripts or written essays.
Prepared video also creates space for creativity and personal presence. Applicants can demonstrate judgment, energy, interpersonal style, and authenticity in their own voice. For that reason, a video essay should not be treated as an informal extra—or simply as a written essay delivered aloud.
