Professor Deepak Malhotra (Harvard Business School)

Deepak Malhotra is a professor and Wall Street Journal best-selling author whose interests include negotiation strategy, trust development, international and ethnic dispute resolution, and competitive escalation. 

Deepak Malhotra received a Bachelor’s degree from the University of Michigan before earning a Ph.D. from Northwestern University Kellogg School of Management.

Dr. Malhotra is currently the Eli Goldston Professor of Business Administration at Harvard Business School. Before working at HBS, he was a visiting professor at the University of Oxford for three years, between 2013-16. 

Professional Experience

Deepak Malhotra has extensive industry experience as a trainer, consultant, and advisor to firms and CEOs across the globe. Further, he has served as an advisor to governments negotiating to end armed conflicts. Previously, Malhotra has also been a Board Member at CollegeVine and served on the Board of Advisors at Nutanix and Cylance, Inc. 

Research and Teaching Interests

His research interests include negotiation strategy, trust development, dispute resolution, and competitive escalation. Dr. Malhotra has published numerous books and articles on these topics. His book publications include: 

Negotiation Genius and Negotiating the Impossible have won the Outstanding Book Award from the International Institute for Conflict Prevention and Resolution.

Professor Malhotra on “The Right Mindset for Negotiation”

Dr. Malhotra teaches Negotiations at Harvard Business School, as well as executive programs like Owner/President Management Program, Changing the Game, and Families in Business. Additionally, he pioneered a new HBS course “War and Peace” on leadership and negotiation lessons from history. 

He has a highly engaging and dynamic teaching style, using experiential learning, case studies, and simulations in the classroom. Dr. Malhotra is dedicated to teaching and is highly engaged with students. To illustrate this, he was voted by students to give the “Best of EC Year” speech in 2011 and 2012.
